Elizabeth was in her room writing letters. She'd been on the way downstairs when she saw that Lady Matlock had arrived, and having no wish to encounter her had returned to her room. She had no doubt Lady Matlock would blame her for Bella’s disappearance.

As each day passed her fears for Bella had grown. She had asked Mr. Darcy if he wanted her to write to one of Bella’s friends from the seminary to enquire of Bella’s whereabouts, but Mr. Darcy had been reluctant to fuel any gossip and had decided that at the moment they would keep the news of Bella’s disappearance to as few people as possible.

Elizabeth put down her quill. Mr. Darcy had been kind and thoughtful towards her and insisted that she had continued to take breakfast with Colonel Fitzwilliam and himself. Although they spoke of Bella, Mr. Darcy had been at pains to talk to her on other subjects and she began to feel that she knew him better. He was certainly less severe than she had first thought. Despite her concerns for Bella it was difficult to ignore her growing feelings for Mr. Darcy.
